It's worth it to replace door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look or if they're difficult to use. With a little patience, you can put in an entirely new handle in a short time.

Modern door handles are usually equipped with cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive look. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle does not have them attached already.

Removing the Old Handle

The door handle is not only a decorative addition to your home, but it's also a safety feature that allows you to lock and unlock the door. But, over time the door handle could lose its grip, appear loose, or look old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time for a replacement.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it may be time to replace it. This is a serious problem since you won't be able to lock or unlock the door, which could put you and your family at risk.

Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They may get trapped. It's a good thing that it's simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.

Most modern door handles are standard size, so they should fit any door. If you are not certain if the new door handle you are buying will work, take out the old one and measure the holes in its housing. This will enable you to buy the right size door handle.

It is easiest to take off the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. This is typically done with the screw driver. Some door double glazed window handles have an enclosure plate that hides the mounting screws. You will need to remove this to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make an outline of how the spindle is positioned so that you can align it when you fit your new one.

Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done with the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located at the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you'll need to take the handle off the strike plate, and then the latch from the door edge.

Take off the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace the latch plate after replacing the handle. It's the part that holds the hole where the door's latch hooks in when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of a door handle). If you have an old rectangular latch plate, swap it with a circular one. This will let the latch hook into the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.

The first step is to remove the screw that is holding the latch plate. The screws can be very tight and will require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be helpful to have another person help with this process.

The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door after the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or doesn't move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

You can now move on to preparing the new door strike plate for installation. With the screws made of wood that came with your new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and open the door to check whether it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate up or down, or forward or back until the door shuts and latches correctly.

If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to enlarge the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch, or damaged strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but with an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks in a hole on the patio door handle replacement (marvelvsdc.faith) frame so that the door remains closed. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to correct the issue.

The screws that support the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it will be easy to remove the latch as well as the bolts that keep the latch and spindle in place.

If the latch won't be released you can try using a paper clip or a tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed slot of the latch, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to break off. You may have to do this several times before the latch comes loose enough to pull out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues after you've removed the old one. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's properly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.

You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle, or your old one is damaged. If you're not changing locks, however, a new latch will fit in the existing recess and work with your current keys. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates that match your existing handles.

Remove the cover plate

The first step in replacing an internal door double glazing handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which conceals the screws and the mechanism within. Look for an release tab on the plate and make use of a flathead screwdriver to pop it off the knob. It could have an opening on one side or be held by a pin.

Remove the screw that holds the handle in the interior and set it aside once the cover plate is removed. Remove the screws that hold both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them with the help of a Philips Screwdriver. Then, take the inner plates and latch plate from the door and set them aside.
